I recently bought a 2004 BMW X5 E53 3.0d. I can hear a vibration/humming noise between 2500-3000rpm no matter at what gear or speed I am going. It just makes this noise between these rpm levels. I don't notice any significant loss of engine power or acceleration at these levels. The engine seems to be working fine even the transmission. 2346 posts · Joined 2007. #6 · Oct 2, 2007. BMW has long used HydraMatics from GM -- probably the best thing GM builds. "Steptronic", as I'm sure most here know, is BMW's trade name for the automatics, irrespective of who makes them (ZF, Getrag or GM). BMW provides the software and controls for all these automatics. I was under my car to fix something with the suspension system and I notice a sticker on the transmission pan that said that the fluid is a lifetime oil and if repairs are necessary to replace it with the same oil. I have a 2003 x5 3.0i so it could be different. Reply.
1) I can get a used mechatronics unit from a salvaged BMW for $340.00. I would then have to purchase the sleeve and gaskets, etc.--OR--2) I can get an entire transmission for $900.00 with 101k miles on it. If I knew for sure there were no other issues I would just get the mechatronics unit.

I had leak on the back from driveshaft seal - this is not hard to fix - half day for mechanic.. need to drop transfer box. Also had leak in front from one of the timing chain covers. Above the alternator there is one of 2 timing chain
The flush should clear out the valve body if that's the issue. Beyond that, I have seen the remanufactured (Not just a rebuild) GM transmission available for about $2500 with a three year warranty. 2002 X5 3.0 259,400 miles (original trans fluid) 2004 325i 115,000 miles (original trans fluid) # 5. 08-05-2014, 12:37 PM. I have a 2005 bmw x5 3.0 that's seems to be have transmission problem. The problem just started 2 days ago and I stop driving it so that I won't do screw it up if it does have a fixable problem . When I put it in drive it jerks when I put it in reverse it jerks and it is not shifting smoothly but rather harsh. Hi, I have a BMW X5 V8 2002 Model. Basically after driving for about an hour or when the car heats up and driving it hard the transmission will automatically go into a sports mode where it will hold in gear until basically it red lines. We have 1. Changed the oil, 2. Changed the Throtle Sensor
As soon as it warms up, it will not drive correctly. When warmed up, it will not move when shifting from P to D (no issues at all when cold). Rev it up and then thud, trans failsafe. Reverse works fine when cold or hot. Checked tranny fluid temp with INPA while driving. 120-130C. Seems very high.
